Always Heading Home

I wrote this when I heard that an old friend had died. He was old, in his 90’s, so it wasn’t unexpected but somehow these things always take us by surprise, don’t they?

We knew it was coming
Still it caught us unawares
There is always fare warning
But we are so ill prepared

But the sun will rise again today
Like the sun has always done
And we carry on along the way
Always heading home

And promises were made
In good faith and in bad
And memories will fade
Of the darker days we had

And like a breath
Life is here and gone
Burn bright on the eye
And stay when breath has done
